Incorporation of the Borough of Montvale

On August 30, 1894, the Borough was incorporated.  It was formed from parts of the townships of Washington and Orvil.  Orvil Township was formed from Hohokus and Washington Townships in 1885. Hohokus was formed from Franklin Township in 1849. Washington was formed from Harrington Township in 1840.

Chronology of miscellaneous dates

1855-1860 J.L. Blauvelt house built (Octagon House) [Historic Sites Survey].

1894  Borough incorporated on August 30.

1899  Original Montvale School No. 2 built on Grand Avenue (wood frame).
1903  Town decides to build macadam roads.
1908  Montvale School No. 2 built on Grand Avenue (brick).
1910 Rockland Electric was granted a franchise to install commercial and public lighting.
1913 Land for the park at town center purchased for $200.00.

1924 Montvale Fire Department established.
1927  Montvale School No. 2 expanded.
1928 Frederick Emerick becomes first full-time borough police officer.  He earned $50.00/month.
1957 August 30 Garden State Parkway connected to the New York State Thruway.
 

1975 October 20 Montvale Public Library opens to the public.
 

CHURCHES
